UEFA Euro 2008 knockout stage
The knockout stage of UEFA Euro 2008 ran from 19 to 29 June 2008, ending with the final at Ernst Happel Stadion in Vienna. All times were in Central European Summer Time. This year’s format was different: teams from groups A and B were kept separate from those in groups C and D until the final. That meant teams from the same group that advanced could meet again in the semi-finals rather than in the final. Only two venues were used for the seven knockout matches (Basel and Vienna). There was no third-place play-off. A new rule forgave yellow cards received up to the quarter-finals, but suspensions could still affect the semi-finals (though not the final if no red card was issued).
Quarterfinals
- Germany 3-2 Portugal (Germany advances)
- Croatia 1-1 Turkey; Turkey win 3-1 on penalties (after extra time)
- Netherlands 1-3 Russia (Russia advances after extra time)
- Spain 0-0 Italy; Spain win 4-2 on penalties (Spain advances)
Semifinals
- Germany 3-1 Turkey (Germany advances to the final)
- Spain 3-0 Russia (Spain advances to the final)
Final
- Spain 1-0 Germany (Fernando Torres scores; Spain win the tournament)
