Turner v. Enrille
Turner v. Enrille is a United States Supreme Court case from 1799. It was argued on August 7 and decided on August 9, 1799. The case is officially listed as Thomas Turner, Administrator of Wright Stanley v. Marquis de Caso Enrille.
What happened: The Court reviewed the judgment and, in a ruling, affirmed the earlier decision in Bingham v. Cabot (3 D. 382) and reversed the Turner v. Enrille judgment because the record did not show whether the plaintiff was an alien or whether the defendants were citizens.
Why it matters: The decision highlights that federal cases require clear proof of alienage and citizenship to establish jurisdiction.
Justices involved: Chief Justice Oliver Ellsworth and Associate Justices William Cushing, James Iredell, William Paterson, Samuel Chase, and Bushrod Washington.
