Tropical cyclones in Russia
Russia, spanning Eastern Europe and North Asia, can be hit by tropical cyclones along its coast, especially in the Far East. Most storms reach Russia as weakened, extratropical systems, and European Russia is less often affected.
Tropical cyclones entering from the east usually travel from Northeast China, cross the Yellow Sea and the Sea of Okhotsk, and reach the Kamchatka Peninsula. A 2022 study suggests this path may be helped by certain mid-latitude weather patterns.
Often typhoons weaken before reaching Russia, but very strong storms can still arrive as typhoons in the far east. Climate change may push cyclone tracks farther north toward the Russian Far East in the coming years.
