Toler Garvey
Toler Roberts Garvey (1865–1946) was an Irish tennis player from Birr, County Offaly. He competed at Wimbledon in 1886, beating William Taylor and reaching the semifinals, where he lost to Herbert Lawford. Garvey won several Irish tournaments, including the King’s County and Ormonde tournaments three times (1886, 1894, 1896). The 1890s were a strong era for Irish tennis. He also served as a Justice of the Peace. Garvey was born February 11, 1865, in Parsonstown (now Birr) and died April 16, 1946, in Birr at age 81.
