Thoracochromis is a group of African cichlid fishes in the haplochromine branch. Most species live in rivers in Angola and Namibia or in the Congo River basin in Central Africa. Thoracochromis wingatii is found in the Nile river system. There are a few suspected, undescribed Nile species—two in the Nile Delta and one in lakes near Fayum—that seem closely related to T. wingatii or Haplochromis loati. The exact boundaries between Thoracochromis and Haplochromis have been debated, and several species have been moved between them in recent years. Currently, 12 species are recognized in Thoracochromis, including T. buysi, which is native to the Kunene River.
