Thomas J. Galvin (December 30, 1932 – February 18, 2004) was an American librarian and academic. Born in Arlington, Massachusetts, he earned a BA in English from Columbia University, an MS in library science from Simmons College, and a PhD from Case Western Reserve University. He held various faculty and leadership roles at Simmons College from 1962 to 1972, eventually becoming associate dean and professor. He then served as dean of the School of Library and Information Science at the University of Pittsburgh from 1974 to 1985. Galvin was president of the American Library Association from 1979 to 1980 and its executive director from 1985 to 1989. In 1989 he became director of the library at the University at Albany and a professor in the School of Information Science and Policy, where he started a doctoral program. He retired in 1999 and was named professor emeritus. Galvin died in Chicago, Illinois, at age 71 and was buried in Milton, Massachusetts. He was married to Marie C. Schumb in 1956.
