The Power Station (TV channel)
The Power Station was a British music TV channel run by British Satellite Broadcasting (BSB), which later became part of BSkyB after a merger. It was based in London and operated from 29 March 1990 until 8 April 1991, when it was replaced by Sky Movies.
Sister channels included The Movie Channel, The Sports Channel, Galaxy, Now, and The Computer Channel. The Power Station offered a variety of music programming and blocks, such as Power Up (weekday mornings with Chris Evans), The Power Hour, The Carmen Ejogo Video Show, The Power Chart with Pat Sharp, Sushi TV, and Swing Shift. It also featured Blue Radio with Boy George, The Power Club, Krush Rap, Rage, The Chart of Charts, Power Haus, Speakeasy, and Raw Power, along with live concerts from artists like Inspiral Carpets, Belinda Carlisle, Jason Donovan, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Phil Collins.
After the November 2, 1990 merger of BSB and Sky Television, the channel continued briefly under the BSkyB brand. It ceased broadcasting around 4:00 am on 8 April 1991; the final program was an episode of Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot shown during Swing Shift. At 6:00 am, Sky Movies launched for BSB viewers, with a month-long free offer if they subscribed to The Movie Channel.
In the channel’s end, The Power Station was replaced by Sky Movies.
