The Hundred-Foot Journey is a 2014 comedy-drama directed by Lasse Hallström and based on a novel by Richard C. Morais. It stars Helen Mirren, Om Puri, Manish Dayal, and Charlotte Le Bon. The story follows a Indian family that opens a restaurant in a French village right across the street from a fancy Michelin-starred French restaurant run by Madame Mallory.

The Kadam family, led by Abbu and his son Hassan, flee trouble in India and find a new start in the village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in France. They open Maison Mumbai, a colorful and welcoming place that attracts hungry locals. Across the street, Mallory runs Le Saule Pleureur, a prestigious French restaurant with a strict chef and high standards. What starts as a clash between two very different kitchens soon becomes a journey of cooking and friendship.

Hassan Kadam is a natural talent in the kitchen. He forms a connection with Marguerite, a local woman who helps him learn about French cooking. His delicious, blended Indian and French dishes win attention. Mallory grows curious about him, and after tasting his food, she invites him to train at Le Saule Pleureur to expand his skills. Abbu initially disagrees, but eventually supports Hassan’s opportunity.

As Hassan becomes more famous, he moves to Paris to work at a high-end restaurant. He shines there, but misses his family and Marguerite. A home-cooked Indian dish brings him to tears because it reminds him of his roots. In the end, Hassan returns to the village to take a leading role at Le Saule Pleureur’s rival, and his family joins him at Maison Mumbai. The friends and the town celebrate with a shared meal that bridges both cultures.

Production and music details include that Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey produced the film for DreamWorks, with help from Amblin Entertainment and others. The film opened in the United States on August 8, 2014, after a New York premiere on August 4. It earned about $90 million worldwide against a $22 million budget. Critics gave mixed-to-positive reviews: Rotten Tomatoes 69% approval, Metacritic 55 out of 100, and audiences gave it an A on CinemaScore. Some critics praised its soothing, comforting feel, while others found the story predictable. Helen Mirren received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical.
