The Bold Caballero is a 1936 American Western film written and directed by Wells Root, based on Zorro created by Johnston McCulley. It stars Robert Livingston as Zorro and Heather Angel as Isabella, with Sig Ruman as the Commandante and Chief Thundercloud as Don Diego Vega’s aide. Notably, Don Alejandro Vega and Bernardo are absent, and John Merton appears uncredited as a First Sergeant.

The film is known for being the first talking Zorro movie and the first Zorro film in color (Magnacolor). It was shot in Chatsworth, Los Angeles, and released by Republic Pictures on December 1, 1936. The running time is 67 minutes.

Plot: Zorro is captured and set to be executed for the Governor’s murder in Spanish California, marked by a backward “Z.” He escapes and reveals his identity to the Governor’s daughter, Isabella. Isabella briefly has Diego arrested, but he convinces her that the real killer is the Commandante. With Isabella’s help, Diego is freed, the Commandante is killed, and Diego and Isabella are reunited.
