The Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment at University College London (UCL) is the university’s main hub for studying the built environment. It is public and was established in 1841. Today it has about 3,500 students and 300 staff, and it includes 13 departments focused on architecture, urban planning, construction, project management, public policy, environmental design and related fields.

The Bartlett is highly regarded around the world. It consistently ranks among the top institutions in Europe and globally for architecture and the built environment. In 2025 it was ranked first worldwide in these areas. UCL started its first architecture chair in 1841, making The Bartlett the UK’s first architecture and built environment school. It was named The Bartlett in 1919 after Sir Herbert Bartlett, a benefactor.

Locations and campuses: The Bartlett operates across several sites in London. Its main base on Bloomsbury is 169 Euston Road. The Bartlett School of Architecture has been at 22 Gordon Street since 2016. Other departments are at Central House (planning and related institutes and the library), 1–19 Torrington Place (Construction and Project Management), 34 Tavistock Square (Development Planning Unit), and 90 Tottenham Court Road (Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis). In 2017, The Bartlett and UCL Engineering expanded into Here East in the Olympic Park, and UCL East opened in 2022 as a new interdisciplinary hub in east London.

Research centers and institutes: The Bartlett hosts many leading groups, including CASA (Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis) and the Development Planning Unit (DPU). It is also home to the Space Syntax Laboratory and the UCL Energy Institute, the Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering, the Institute for Sustainable Heritage and the UCL Institute for Global Prosperity, along with other programs. The Bartlett Library moved to Central House in 2014.

People and programs: The current dean is Jacqui Glass. The Bartlett’s architecture courses are validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). The school has a history of influential professors, such as Iain Borden, Adrian Forty, Jonathan Hill, CJ Lim, Alan Penn and Jane Rendell. The director of the Bartlett School of Architecture is Amy Kulper.

Addressing concerns: In 2021–22, there were serious claims of sexism and harassment at the Bartlett School of Architecture. An external review led to findings of unacceptable behavior and a plan for improvements. UCL apologized in 2022 and took steps to adjust leadership and practices to create a safer, more inclusive environment.
