Sylvester is the county seat of Worth County in Georgia. It is known as the Peanut Capital of the World because of its peanut farming, and its motto is "Small Town. Big Heart." The city had 5,644 residents in 2020 and serves as Worth County’s main business hub.

Sylvester was laid out in 1893 and became an incorporated town on December 21, 1898. It sits at the junction of U.S. Highway 82 and Georgia State Route 33, with Georgia State Route 256 entering the southeast part of the city as Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. The city covers about 5.7 square miles, mostly land, at an elevation of 387 feet.

The Worth County School District serves pre-school through 12th grade, with two elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school, employing about 296 full-time teachers and educating more than 4,354 students.
