Sunset Rollercoaster
Sunset Rollercoaster is a five‑piece band from Taipei, Taiwan. Their sound blends jazz, funk, disco, synth‑pop, and indie rock. The members are Kuo-Hung Tseng (vocals, guitar), Hung-Li Chen (bass), Shao-Hsuan Wang (keyboard), Tsun-Lung Lo (drums), and Hao-Ting Huang (saxophone). A former member was Shih-Wei Huang (percussion). The band’s name comes from a 2009 photo booth picture with a sunset and rollercoaster in the background. They mostly sing in English to let listeners interpret the songs in their own way, inspired by Velvet Underground videos.
Sunset Rollercoaster began in 2009 as a trio with Tseng, Kevin Lee, and Lo Zun Long. They released their debut album Bossa Nova in 2011 before disbanding. Tseng and Lo later formed another project, Forests, with a darker sound. The group reformed in 2015 and released their second album, Cassa Nova, in 2018. In 2019 they put out the EP Vanilla Villa, a story about an alien who loves a human and wants to take them to a villa.
The band has played at major events around the world. They performed at Summer Sonic in Japan in 2011 and at SummerStage in Central Park, New York, during the Taiwanese Waves festival in 2017. They recorded a live Audiotree session in 2018, becoming the first Taiwanese band to do so, and toured North America on the Business Trip Tour that year.
In early 2020, Tseng wrote lyrics in Los Angeles for Soft Storm and recorded some parts with Ned Doheny. Their 2020 album Soft Storm was named the fourth best album in Asia by NME that year. They contributed songs to the anime Sonny Boy, and in 2024 they collaborated with Hyukoh on the album AAA, which earned seven nominations at the 36th Golden Melody Awards.
