Student-run advertising agency

A student-run advertising agency (SRA) is an advertising agency run by students. It usually operates within a college or university program, and students can work there for academic credit or as volunteers. Some SRAs exist as student clubs.

They offer advertising and related communications services to clients such as college departments, small businesses, and nonprofits. Services include public relations, marketing, promotions, and social media. Some SRAs charge for their work, others operate for free, and some focus on philanthropy by offering services to nonprofits while asking for charitable donations from for-profit clients to support learning.

Most SRAs use an integrated marketing communications approach, combining advertising with PR and other services.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused many SRAs to shut down, and some have not returned.

Clients benefit from professional-quality work at little or no cost. Students benefit from real-world experience that classroom work can’t fully provide. They mentor one another and often educate clients through reverse mentoring. Time management and teamwork are essential as students work to satisfy clients and their faculty supervisor, ensuring the work is both academically appropriate and professionally relevant.

Supervision by a faculty advisor helps maintain standards and learning goals, making the SRA a valuable stepping stone to the professional world.
