Stephen Palmquist is an American philosopher best known for his work on Immanuel Kant and the philosophy of religion. Born in 1957 in Nome, Alaska, he spent much of his career teaching philosophy in Hong Kong and now lives in Los Angeles.

Education and early career
Palmquist studied at Westmont College, where he worked as a part-time youth minister before deciding to become a university teacher. He began doctoral studies at Oxford University in 1980 and earned a PhD in Philosophical Theology in 1987, under the supervision of John Macquarrie and W. H. Walsh. In 1987 he joined Hong Kong Baptist University (then Baptist College) and began a long period of teaching and research there.

Kant scholarship and lifelong projects
Palmquist helped make Kant’s writings available in electronic form and founded Kant on the Web in 1995, an award-winning site that became a valuable resource for Kant scholars. He has published more than 200 works, including 12 books and more than 110 refereed articles and chapters, translated into many languages. In 2020, he received HKBU’s President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Scholarly Work.

Philosophical approach and major ideas
Palmquist is known for a perspectival interpretation of Kant, emphasizing the architectonic role of reason to resolve long-standing contradictions in Kant’s philosophy. He argues that Kant’s entire system has a theocentric orientation that provides a foundation for a religion and theology aimed at restoring Christianity to its pure form. A key claim is that Kant’s Religion within the Bounds of Bare Reason seeks to elevate morality to the level of religion, suggesting that faith is needed to fulfill rational limits. His work also traces the roots of panentheism in Kant’s philosophy of religion and culminates in a comprehensive, revised translation and commentary on Kant’s Religion.

Hong Kong Philosophy Café and Kant Society
In 1999 Palmquist founded the Hong Kong Philosophy Café, a popular forum that brings philosophical discussion into the marketplace and draws people from many walks of life. By 2012 the Café reportedly had a mailing list of over 700. Talks cover contemporary metaphysical, political, and economic topics. In 2015 he established the Hong Kong Kant Society, affiliated with the American Philosophical Association, which organizes Kant-focused events in Hong Kong. Before that, he organized Asia’s Kant in Asia conferences (2009 and 2016), which featured renowned philosophers and were published in conference proceedings.

Major publications
Palmquist’s books include Kant and Mysticism: Critique as the Experience of Baring All in Reason’s Light (2019); Kant on Intuition: Western and Asian Perspectives on Transcendental Idealism (2019); Comprehensive Commentary on Kant’s Religion Within the Bounds of Bare Reason (2015); Cultivating Personhood: Kant and Asian Philosophy (editor, 2010); Kant and the New Philosophy of Religion (co-edited with Chris L. Firestone, 2006); Kant’s Critical Religion (2000); and Kant’s System of Perspectives (1993). His work has been widely cited and translated, contributing significantly to contemporary Kant scholarship and the dialogue between Western and Asian philosophy.
