Steak sauce
Steak sauce is a tangy brown condiment commonly served with beef in the United States. It’s usually tomato-based with vinegar, spices, raisins, and sometimes anchovies, and it’s similar to Britain’s brown sauce. The flavor can be tart or sweet and peppery, with some similarities to Worcestershire sauce.
In the United States, the best-known brands are A1 (originally British), Heinz 57 (made in the U.S. with a ketchup-like base plus malt vinegar, mustard, raisins, apple, garlic, and onion), and Lea & Perrins (British-made). There are many other brands, regional sauces, and store brands that aim for that slightly sweet, steak-friendly taste. Heinz 57 was once advertised as “ketchup with a kick.”
