Stan Smith (footballer, born 1884)
Stanley Smith (22 September 1884 – 31 March 1956) was an English footballer who played as an outside right for Southampton in the Southern League from 1908 to 1911. Born in Southampton, he played for local clubs and earned Hampshire FA honours. He joined Southampton in 1908 and quickly gained a reputation for crossing the ball accurately from awkward positions. Smith made 9 league appearances for the club. He made his first-team debut on Christmas Day 1908 at West Ham United, in a 1–0 defeat, and kept his place for two more games before John Bainbridge returned. After two years in the reserves, he was recalled on 31 December 1910 and played six matches as the forward line was shuffled due to Harry Brown's absence. He left football in 1911 and joined the 18th (Queen Mary’s Own) Hussars to serve in World War I.
