Sornpichai Kratingdaenggym
Sornpichai Kratingdaenggym, born Nikhom Chuboon on May 1, 1974, in Lampang, Thailand, is a former Thai professional boxer. Also known as Matjurat mueang nuea, "Northern Death," he grew up in Kamphaeng Phet and started in Muay Thai before turning to boxing. He boxed professionally from 1995 to 2001, mainly in the flyweight division (later moving to super-flyweight), and finished with a record of 30 wins (19 by knockout), 4 losses, and 1 draw.
In 1996 he won the WBU flyweight title by beating Angel Almena in Chiang Rai and defended it five times before being stripped in 1997. His first defense was a unanimous decision over Luigi Castiglione in Italy on August 8, 1996, and he also defeated Daniel Ward that year in Loei. In 1998 he moved up to super-flyweight and won the PABA title, defending it four times before returning to flyweight.
On September 3, 1999, he challenged for the WBA flyweight title against Leo Gámez in Mukdahan and won by knockout in the eighth round to become the WBA flyweight champion, the fourth Thai to hold the WBA flyweight crown. He lost the title in his second defense to Eric Morel on August 5, 2000, in Madison, Wisconsin.
Sornpichai retired after a ninth-round knockout to Jun Toriumi in early 2004 at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo. He later worked as a boxing trainer in countries such as China and Vietnam before returning to Thailand due to eye injuries that have affected him since he was 10. He currently lives with his daughter from a previous marriage.
