Sir Parashurambhau College
Sir Parashurambhau College (SP College) is an autonomous public college in Pune, Maharashtra. It started in 1916 as New Poona College and was later renamed to honor Parashurambhau Patwardhan, who donated funds. The college is governed by Shikshan Prasarak Mandali, a private education society, and has been autonomous since 2019. It is located on Tilak Road, Sadashiv Peth, Pune, on a 25-acre campus with heritage buildings, botanical gardens, and a swimming pool.
SP College offers education from junior college (11th–12th grade) to postgraduate levels. It is affiliated to Savitribai Phule Pune University for degree courses and to the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) for school-level exams. The Junior College is large, enrolling about 3,800 students, including around 1,600 in Science. The college day lasts about 6.5 hours with nine class periods.
Students choose one of three streams at the 11th–12th level: Science, Arts, or Commerce (Business). In Science, compulsory subjects include English, Physics, Chemistry, Environmental Science, and Physical Education, with optional subjects such as Mathematics, Biology, Marathi, German, Hindi, Geography, Computer Science and Applications, Electronics, Electrical/Electronic Maintenance, and more. In Arts, compulsory subjects are English, a language (Marathi/Hindi/German/Sanskrit), Environmental Science, and Health & Physical Education, with electives like Economics, Mathematics, History, Psychology, Geography, Political Science, German, Sanskrit, Hindi, and Marathi (up to three languages). In Commerce, compulsory subjects are English, a language (Marathi/Hindi/Sanskrit/German), Environmental Science, and Physical Education, with electives such as Economics, Mathematics, Secretarial Practice, Organization of Commerce, and Book-keeping and Accountancy.
Assessment includes four exams per year: two unit tests, a terminal exam, and an annual exam. Grades are given on a 100-point scale. At the end of Grade 12, students take the statewide board exams, which influence university admissions.
Beyond academics, SP College offers many clubs and activities, such as Book Club, Art Circle, Debating Union, Marathi literature and science groups, film and culture clubs, NSS, NCC, and various sports. The college also hosts MAVEN, a national-level skill and entrepreneurship event held usually in mid-January. The campus supports a rich cultural and sports life, with inter-school and intercollegiate competitions.
SP College is NAAC accredited with an A+ grade (3.70/4). The current leadership includes Principal Prof. Dr. Avinash Moharil and vice principals Prof. Vidya Avachat (Arts), Prof. Pravin Ranasure (Commerce), and Prof. Sunita Jadhav (Science). The college’s motto is "निर्वाहः प्रतिपन्न वस्तुषु."
