History and background
The train has a long history. It began in 1985 as a Tirupati–Varanasi biweekly service with numbers 7489/7490 and included slip-sleeper coaches between Hyderabad (Secunderabad) and Varanasi. It was later extended to Patna during Nitish Kumar’s tenure and became associated with the Manikarnika Ghat name in Varanasi. In 1987, a Secunderabad–Varanasi biweekly service was introduced as numbers 7091/7092, using the same rake as the Cochin–Varanasi Express via Tirupati (7089/7090). The service was also linked to other trains like the Dakshin Express and Telangana Express as an important North India link. Ara Junction began being served by this train from September 10, 2015. Today, it is one of Indian Railways’ top-earning trains.
