Sapphire (Teena Marie album)
Sapphire is Teena Marie’s twelfth studio album, released on May 9, 2006, by Cash Money and Universal Records. Recorded in 2006, it runs 74 minutes and 45 seconds and features guests Smokey Robinson, George Duke, Gerald Albright, rapper Kurupt, and Teena Marie’s daughter Alia Rose. The album was produced by Ronald Williams and Bryan Williams. The lead single “Ooh Wee” (featuring Kurupt) peaked at #32 on the US Hot R&B Singles chart. The tracks “You Blow Me Away” pay tribute to Rick James, and “Resilient (Sapphire)” honors Hurricane Katrina victims. Sapphire peaked at #3 on the US R&B Albums chart and #24 on the Billboard 200. Critics praised Marie’s enduring voice and the blend of old-school and contemporary R&B; AllMusic gave it 4/5 stars, USA Today noted its strong, jewel-like qualities, and other reviews highlighted its energy and songs. The album contains 16 tracks.
