Samia Mehrez (born January 1, 1955) is an Egyptian professor, literary critic, and researcher who specializes in contemporary literature. She is the President of the Center for Translation Studies at the American University in Cairo (AUC). Mehrez has written and lectured on translation, contemporary Arab literature, and post-colonial studies.

Education and career: She earned a BA in English, Comparative Literature, and Drama from AUC in 1977, an MA in Comparative Literature from AUC in 1979, and a PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of California in 1985. She has taught at AUC, served as a professor of Arabic Literature in the Department of Arab and Islamic Civilizations, and worked as an assistant professor at Cornell University from 1984 to 1990. She continues to teach modern Arabic literature and give lectures on translation studies at AUC.

Languages: Mehrez speaks five languages: Arabic, English, French, Italian, and Spanish. She has participated in many international conferences, such as Translation and Activism at the University of Granada, Pre-Modern Performance in Istanbul, and the Nation and Translation Workshop in Berlin.

Fields: Her work covers comparative English literature, drama, and modern Arab literature. She is also Ibrahim Nagi’s granddaughter.
