Roman villa of Rabaçal
Near Penela in Portugal, the Roman villa of Rabaçal lay along the old road between Lisbon and Braga. Excavations began in 1984 and uncovered a villa built around an octagonal central courtyard, with other rooms arranged around it. The north part of the site was the pars rustica (economic area) and the western part was the pars urbana (living area). The mosaics, kept protected today, form a separate group. They are figurative and include scenes of the seasons, a four-horse chariot, a seated woman, and unique geometric and plant designs not found elsewhere in Portugal. Coordinates: 40.03837°N, -8.45767°W.
