Rendez-vous '87
Rendez-vous '87 was a two-game international ice hockey series between the Soviet Union national team and a team of NHL All-Stars, held in Quebec City's Colisée de Québec from February 11 to 13, 1987. The series replaced the NHL All-Star festivities for the 1986–87 season. The Soviet team was paid $80,000 for their appearance, while the NHL players raised $350,000 for a pension fund.
The teams split the games, but the Soviets outscored the NHL team 8–7 on aggregate. Game 1 saw the NHL All-Stars win 4–3 in front of 15,398 fans. The winning goal came on a deflection from Mario Lemieux, with Dave Poulin scoring; Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri, and Esa Tikkanen supplied strong offense for the NHL lineup. Game 2 ended 5–3 in favor of the Soviet Union, with 15,395 fans in attendance. The Soviet forward line of Valeri Kamensky, Viacheslav Bykov, and Andrei Khomutov stood out.
For the uniforms, the NHL wore special white jerseys designed for the event, while the Soviet team wore their standard red uniforms with СССР on the front and captain Viacheslav Fetisov wearing the captain’s letter. After the games, players exchanged jerseys as part of hockey tradition.
Broadcast coverage varied by country: CBC provided Canadian TV coverage, and ESPN carried the games in the United States.
