Radio Waikato was a Hamilton radio station that broadcast on 954 AM. It started in 1971 as New Zealand’s third privately owned station, originally on 930 AM and moving to 954 AM in 1978 when the AM band spacing changed. In 1986 it switched to country music and was renamed Country Gold – Waikato 954. In 1988 the 954 frequency was sold to Radio Pacific, which then broadcast Radio Pacific to the Waikato region, initially with local programming but later with networked programs from Auckland. In 1993 a new station called Radio Waikato began in Hamilton, but it had no connection to the original. This new station ran on 576 AM and 100.0 FM and closed in 1994. After that, the AM frequency was used by Radio Liberty in the mid-1990s, and the FM frequency carried Radio Hauraki from 1995 to 1997.
