Philip C. Hammond
Philip C. Hammond (died 2008) was an American archaeologist who directed digs in the West Bank, Jordan, and Egypt, including Nag Hammadi, Tel Rumeida, and Petra. Jeffrey R. Chadwick called him the “Lion of Petra” for his work there. After World War II, he earned a Ph.D. in archaeology from Yale in 1957 and taught at Lycoming College, Princeton Theological Seminary, and Brandeis University before joining the University of Utah in 1969.
