Pete Samples
Pete Samples is the electronic music project of Canadian musician Brent Freedman. He was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and later moved to Montreal to study fine art at Concordia University, where he began making electronic music and adopted the name Pete Samples.
His first album, An Unsent Letter, came out in 2004, followed by Yours Makes Mine in 2007. The latter reached number 10 on the !Earshot electronic charts. In 2008 he released a mini-album called The Jumper Cables, which appeared on the Electronica Top 50 charts. In 2010 the single Bekonscot received regular radio play on campus and community stations, and he performed at the Halifax Pop Explosion.
Freedman and his wife, Robin McMillan, moved from Montreal to Vancouver. He began exploring woodworking, making small wooden furniture models in his home studio. He completed one final Pete Samples album, Bekonscot, writing all the songs and layering his singing and various instruments. The album was packaged with photographs of his wooden furniture designs.
In 2011 he toured with Rich Aucoin, including a show in Ottawa. By 2013 Pete Samples went on hiatus as Freedman and McMillan focused on a furniture design company called Gamla in Vancouver. They later moved to Bowen Island, where Freedman set up a workshop and studio.
