Pentwyn, Llanllowell
Pentwyn is a privately owned farmhouse in Llanllowell, Monmouthshire, dating from the mid-16th century. It was built around 1560–1570, originally in an L-plan, and rebuilt in the 18th century. The house is Grade II* listed, while the nearby barn has its own Grade II listing. The entrance front comes from the Georgian remodelling, and the building is noted for its early stone mullioned windows.
On a tithe map from 1837, Pentwyn was owned by Thomas James and farmed on 161 acres by Mattias Goff. The 1895 Kelly's Directory records Evans Francis as a resident.
Scholars Cyril Fox and Lord Raglan dated Pentwyn to 1560–1570 and described its early stone mullioned windows, placing it in their “exotic” group of Monmouthshire houses. The architectural historian John Newman also notes that Pentwyn is conspicuously sited on a hill overlooking the River Usk.
