Parks and open spaces in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames
Kingston upon Thames sits along the River Thames where the Hogsmill River joins it. The borough has more than 30 parks, 24 playgrounds, sports grounds and other open spaces, plus over 20 allotment sites run by residents or the council. A 2006 survey found 165 hectares of parkland and 340 hectares of other open spaces. Much of the riverfront is open to the public. Notable spaces include Canbury Gardens to Lower Ham Road, Dysart open space, Royal Park Gate recreation ground, and the Hawker Centre sports ground, forming a link to Ham Lands in nearby Richmond upon Thames. South of the town centre, Queens Promenade offers river frontage to Surbiton. People can walk along the Hogsmill River from its mouth by the Thames to Hogsmill River Park. Other spaces include the western half of Beverley Park, the University of London Athletic Ground and the BBC Sports Ground in Motspur Park. The southern tip of Richmond Park used to be in the borough but moved to Richmond upon Thames in 1994. Kingston's Green Spaces strategy for 2015–2021 guides how parks and open spaces are managed.
