The Order of the Liberator General San Martín (Orden del Libertador General San Martín) is Argentina’s highest decoration. It is awarded by the President of Argentina to foreign politicians or military figures who have earned the country’s highest recognition. The order is named after General José de San Martín, the Father of the Nation and Liberator. Its original design was created by Ángel Eusebio Ibarra García, an Argentine engineer and sculptor. The order was established on 17 August 1943 by Decree No. 5,000 and later amended by Law No. 13,202 on 21 May 1948; it was repealed and re-created by Decree Law No. 16,628 on 17 December 1957. The changes were only in form, and the regulations in force were approved by Decree No. 16,643 on 18 December 1967. The Grades of the order are: Collar, Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer, and Member.
