Mucinous cystadenocarcinoma
Mucinous cystadenocarcinoma is a rare tumor that can occur in the breast or ovary. These tumors usually form multiple, smooth-walled cysts (multilocular) and may contain blood products or cellular debris inside the cysts.
Classification of these tumors is difficult and controversial. They fall on a spectrum from clearly benign lesions with no invasion to malignant tumors that invade surrounding tissue. Some tumors show epithelial atypia (abnormal cells) but do not invade; for these, the malignant potential is uncertain. In some cases, a cyst can rupture and mucus (mucin) can leak into nearby tissue, a phenomenon that can occur with mucinous cystic tumors.
Because this is a rare and specialized condition, evaluation by oncology and pathology experts is important.
