Most Faithful Majesty
Most Faithful Majesty was the title used by Portuguese monarchs from 1748 to 1910. The Latin word fidelissimus means "most faithful." The title Rex Fidelissimus (Most Faithful King) in Portuguese Rei Fidelíssimo was given by Pope Benedict XIV in 1748 to King João V of Portugal and to his heirs. The Fidelissimus title remains attached to Portugal and to the royal line descended from João V. The title can be awarded to a king or a queen. Portugal is the only European monarchy to have received this title; other monarchies have received similar papal titles.
