Mokane, Missouri
Mokane is a small city in southern Callaway County, Missouri. It’s part of the Jefferson City metropolitan area. The population was 188 in 2020, and the city covers 0.29 square miles, all land.
Location and features:
Mokane sits on the north side of the Missouri River valley along Missouri Route 94, between Tebbetts to the southwest and Steedman to the northeast. Fulton is about 12 miles north. The Katy Trail, a long bike and hike path, passes through Mokane at mile 125.
History:
The settlement began as Smith’s Landing around 1818, named after settler Thomas Smith. It later became known as Saint Aubert when a post office opened in 1849. By 1897, it was named Mokane, after the Missouri-Kansas-Eastern Railway that ran through the town. The town moved slightly north on maps due to flooding in the area.

Demographics:
In 2010, Mokane had 185 people, 73 households, and 48 families. The population was predominantly White, with a median age of about 27. Many households included children, and there was a mix of families and non-families.
Government:
As of April 2022, the mayor is Chad Booher. The alderwomen are Jo Belmont, Debbie Taylor, Tara Kirk, and Julie Nichols. The city office was moved to 509 Hilltop Drive after the 2019 flood.
