Maranhão slider
The Maranhão slider (Trachemys adiutrix) is an endangered turtle from Brazil. It belongs to the Emydidae family and is native to northeastern Brazil, mainly in the state of Maranhão and also in Piauí.
The species name adiutrix means “helper” in Latin, honoring Dr. Maria do Socorro Pinheiro, who worked with the scientist who described the turtle. The common name Carvalho’s slider honors Brazilian herpetologist Antenor Leitão de Carvalho. Some scientists treat it as a subspecies of Trachemys dorbigni (as Trachemys dorbigni adiutrix), which could reflect an introduced population.
Note: The name has also appeared as Trachemys aduitrix by mistake.
