A podcast client (also called a podcatcher or podcast app) is a program or phone app that streams or downloads podcasts using an RSS feed. Many can also download video podcasts, news feeds, text, or pictures, and some can automatically send files to a portable player. Most include a searchable directory of podcasts (often via Apple Podcasts or Podcast Index), but you can also subscribe directly by using a podcast’s RSS URL. The idea started around 2000, with the first commercial client in 2001. Podcasts became popular when Apple added them to iTunes 4.9 and the iPod in June 2005. Apple Podcasts is now on all Apple devices like iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
