Hangzhou’s declared historic buildings are places officially protected for their historical, scientific, or artistic value. Since January 1, 2005, regulations require a site to be more than 50 years old and worthy of study to be considered historic. Declaring a building needs consultation with the Urban Planning Administration Bureau and the Real Estate Administration Bureau. By June 2011, Hangzhou had 287 declared historic buildings in five batches. A sixth batch with 51 buildings is planned. The fourth batch, announced in August 2008, included 52 buildings. This information comes from the Real Estate Administration Bureau and the Research Institute for Historic Buildings in Hangzhou.
