Kisumu District
Kisumu District was an administrative district in Nyanza Province in western Kenya. Its capital was Kisumu. In 1999, about 504,359 people lived there, and the area covered 919 square kilometers. The main livelihoods were subsistence farming and fishing on Lake Victoria. Kisumu Town was the region’s main commercial center.
The district was created in 1968 when Central Kavirondo District (renamed Central Nyanza District) was split into Kisumu and Siaya districts. The district was later divided as new districts were formed. In 2013, Kisumu County was established, and all districts carved out of Kisumu District after 1992 were brought together into the new county.
Kisumu District had two local authorities and three constituencies.
