jPOS is a free, open‑source Java library and framework for point‑of‑sale (POS) software. It provides the messaging layer that moves electronic card transactions between POS/ATM devices and back‑end financial networks. It supports ISO 8583 (versions 1987, 1993, 2003) and ANSX9.24 standards, making it the messaging backbone for card payments. jPOS is cross‑platform, written in Java, and released under the AGPLv3 license. Stable release: 1.9.2 (Aug 3, 2013); preview 1.9.0 (Mar 2, 2013). As of early 2023, two global standards govern POS messages. In June 2025, Transactility, Inc. (the marketing company for jPOS) announced jPOS 3. For more information, visit jpos.org.
