Hungarians in Finland
Hungarians in Finland
There are about 3,000 Hungarians living in Finland. They are mainly in Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Tampere, Turku and Kauhajoki.
They speak Hungarian and Finnish. Most are Christians, mainly Catholics.
History in brief: Before the 1960s, many came for family, work or religious reasons. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Finland took in some Hungarian refugees from Romania. Since the 1990s, many Hungarians came as guest workers or exchange students. Before the 1980s there were only about 150 Hungarians in Finland.
In 2014, about 2,600 people in Finland spoke Hungarian, including some from Transylvania. In the 2000s Hungarians worked for Nokia. More recently, some have moved to Ostrobothnia to work in groceries. Many Hungarian immigrants to Finland are musicians.
Bóbita ry is the main Hungarian organization in Finland, based in the Helsinki region.
