Huizhou
Huizhou is a prefecture‑level city in eastern Guangdong Province, China, about 70 kilometers north of Hong Kong. It sits in the Pearl River Delta, bordered by Guangzhou to the west, Shenzhen and Dongguan to the southwest, Shaoguan to the north, Heyuan to the northeast, Shanwei to the east, and Daya Bay to the south.
Population and area
As of the 2020 census, Huizhou’s total population is about 6 million. Its urban core, in Huicheng and Huiyang districts, is home to around 2 million people. The city’s people are predominantly Han Chinese, with communities of Hakka, Hoklo, Yao and She minorities. Many people of Huizhou origin live in Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan.
Economy and development
Since the 1980s Huizhou has grown into a manufacturing hub. It hosts several development zones, including the Daya Bay Economic and Technological Development Zone, an Export Processing Zone, and the Zhongkai High-tech Industrial Development Zone. TCL, the electronics giant, has its headquarters here. The city is well connected by road and rail to Guangzhou, Shenzhen and other cities, and Huizhou Pingtan Airport serves the area (reopened in 2015). There have been plans and pilots for driverless trains and faster transit to nearby cities.
Geography and sights
Huizhou has a coastline along Daya Bay with about 100 islands. One of its famous sights is West Lake (formerly Feng Lake) in Huizhou, celebrated for its beauty. The poet Su Shi was exiled here in the Song Dynasty, and he gave West Lake its name after visiting Hangzhou’s famous lake; nearby Su Di Bridge is a noted feature.
History and culture
Historically a prosperous center for commerce, Huizhou’s population grew through migrations during late Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. Today, the city blends traditional Cantonese and Hakka influences, with local languages including Hakka (Huiyang dialect), Cantonese, Hokkien, and Huizhou dialect.
Climate
Huizhou has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and short, mild, dry winters. The Daya Bay area is known for its marine environment, including dolphins, and has a history of rich coastal life.
