Hsinchu Science Park
Hsinchu Science Park is Taiwan’s top high‑tech industrial area. Created in 1980, it has grown into six campuses across Hsinchu City and County, Miaoli, Taoyuan, and Yilan, covering about 1,471 hectares. The park now hosts more than 580 companies and about 177,000 workers, mainly in semiconductors, computers, telecommunications, and electronics. It is home to major chip makers like TSMC and UMC and a large network of suppliers and related firms. The park sits beside prominent universities—National Tsing Hua University and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University—and Taiwan’s National Space Organization.
History and purpose
The idea for Hsinchu Science Park came from Shu Shien-Siu, a former president of National Tsing Hua University and Taiwan’s Minister of Science and Technology. Inspired by Silicon Valley, the plan was to boost private industry and innovation in Taiwan. Li Kwoh-ting helped push the project, and Morris Chang later led the development of Taiwan’s chip industry there. The park opened in 1980, with early efforts to build Taiwan’s semiconductor capability. Over the years, it expanded to other sites and added a Biomedical Science Park. In 2019, the name was simplified from Hsinchu Science and Industrial Park to Hsinchu Science Park.
What’s there now (overview)
- The park hosts hundreds of tech firms, especially in semiconductors, computers, telecoms, and optoelectronics.
- It contains the world’s leading semiconductor fabs and a dense ecosystem of suppliers and service companies.
- Around 584 tenant companies and roughly 177,000 workers were recorded in 2024.
- Nearby universities and the space organization help fuel research and talent for the Park.
- The park has its own wastewater treatment facilities (opened in 1986) and monitors air quality to protect the environment.
Locations (six campuses)
- Hsinchu Science Park (East District, Hsinchu City and Baoshan, Hsinchu County)
- Zhunan Science Park (Zhunan, Miaoli County)
- Longtan Science Park (Longtan District, Taoyuan)
- Tongluo Science Park (Tongluo Township, Miaoli County)
