Hobby Computer Club
The Hobby Computer Club (HCC) is a Dutch computer club based in Haarlem, Netherlands. It was started on April 27, 1977, near Leiden by Dick Barnhoorn and others, and was inspired by the Amateur Computer Club founded in 1973 by Mike Lord. The club expanded to include Dutch and Flemish speakers in the Netherlands and Belgium.
In the beginning, members wrote to popular electronics and IT magazines, and the first HCC logo was a copy of the ACC logo. The first HCC meeting took place at Delft University of Technology with 12 members. A small bimonthly newsletter called HCCN was published, later evolving into a monthly magazine named Computer!Totaal.
After a large hobby event in April 1978, membership jumped from about 200 to over 1,000. HCC soon had branches all over the Netherlands and grew to more than 200,000 members by 2003. The newsletter became the monthly Computer!Totaal magazine.
HCC offers a free internet service to members and free technical help with computer problems. For many years the club ran a big exhibition called HCC dagen at Jaarbeurs in Utrecht, where members showcased activities and commercial parties demonstrated and sold products. It was paused in 2010 as online sales grew, and in 2011 HCC organized a smaller event called HCC!digital.
