Guglielmo Piani
Guglielmo Piani (September 16, 1875 – September 27, 1956), also known as William Piani, was an Italian Catholic priest who served as a diplomat for the Holy See. Born in Martinengo, Italy, he was ordained a Salesian priest in 1898. In 1922 he became the Vatican’s Apostolic Delegate to the Philippines, a post he held until 1948, and he was consecrated a bishop on May 14, 1922. In 1936 he went to Mexico as an Apostolic Visitor to study the church–state conflict there, helping shape Vatican strategy after the death of the Mexican Archbishop. In 1948 Pope Pius XII named him Apostolic Visitor to Mexico, and in 1951 he became Apostolic Delegate to Mexico, remaining in that role until his death in 1956 at age 81.
