Gerard Thomas
Gerard Thomas (1663–1721) was a late Flemish Baroque painter who specialized in interior scenes of studios and picture galleries. He became a master in Antwerp’s Guild of St. Luke in 1688–89 and served as dean twice. His paintings reflect a popular Antwerp trend around 1700, showing artists—often earlier masters like Rubens, van Dyck, or Jordaens—in their studios, surrounded by artworks and sculptures, and teaching a young apprentice. In many works, the masters are hinted at rather than shown directly, implied by the art pictured within the scene.
