Georgios Koumanakos
Georgios Koumanakos (Greek: Γεώργιος Κουμανάκος) was a Greek army officer and peace activist born around 1913 in Gytheio, Mani. He fought in World War II, including the Greco-Italian War and the Battle of Greece, and later in the Greek Civil War. He rose to lieutenant general and led the Greek Expeditionary Force in Korea.
In 1967-1974, he opposed the Greek military dictatorship and was retired and placed in internal exile for three years. After democracy returned in 1974, he became chairman of the Hellenic Telecommunications Organization (OTE) and of the PYRKAL weapons industry.
During the 1980s, he became a well-known activist for nuclear disarmament and for the withdrawal of US bases from Greece. In 1981, he co-signed the Generals for Peace and Disarmament initiative with other NATO generals and joined the World Peace Council. He died around 2003.
