George Hill (born about 1844) was an English-born sailor who served in the United States Navy. After immigrating to the United States, he joined the Navy and served as Chief Quarter Gunner on the USS Kansas (1863). On April 12, 1872, near Greytown, Nicaragua, several crew members drowned. Hill remained calm and, through his heroic actions and personal exertion, helped save others and prevented greater loss of life. He was awarded the Medal of Honor on July 9, 1872. The men who died in the incident included Commander Alexander Foster Crosman, Master Alfred Foree, Cockswain William Walker, and Ordinary Seamen Emil Birgfield, William Arkwright, and James Eley (whose body was recovered on April 13, 1872).
