Frank Broome
Frank Broome (11 June 1915 – 10 September 1994) was an English footballer and manager who played as a forward. Born in Berkhamsted, he began his career with Boxmoor United and Berkhamsted Town before joining Aston Villa in 1934. He made his first-team impact in the mid-1930s and helped Villa win promotion to the top division in 1938. Broome stayed with Villa until 1946, making 136 league appearances and scoring 78 goals.
After the war, he played for Derby County (1946–1949) and Notts County (1949–1952), plus shorter spells with Brentford, Crewe Alexandra and Shelbourne in Ireland. Internationally, Broome represented England seven times between 1938 and 1949, scoring three goals, including a goal on his debut against Germany during a 1938 tour. He also guested for Nottingham Forest and Wolves during World War II.
Following his playing career, Broome moved into management and coaching. His roles included Notts County (assistant 1955–1958; caretaker in 1957) and Exeter City (1958–1960 and 1967–1969), with other posts at Southend United (1960), Bankstown in Australia (1961–1962), Corinthian (1962–1967) and Melita Eagles (1967). His work took him abroad before he returned to finish his managerial days with Exeter City.
Frank Broome is remembered for his pace and skill as a forward, his contributions to Aston Villa, and his service to England at the international level.
