Federazione Industria Musicale Italiana (FIMI) is the umbrella group that coordinates Italy’s music recording industry. It was formed in 1992 in Milan after major labels left the older AFI, and it now represents thousands of companies—about 2,500 as of 2011. FIMI is a member of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) and Confindustria, and its main goal is to protect the interests of the Italian record industry.

FIMI runs Italy’s official music charts. The Album Chart began in March 1995 (the first #1 was Bruce Springsteen’s Greatest Hits) and has evolved over time, moving from Nielsen to GfK Retail and Technology Italia in 2010, with digital album sales included from October 2011. The Compilations Chart also started in March 1995. The Official Singles Chart began in January 1997 (the first #1 was Depeche Mode’s "Barrel of a Gun"); it was originally based on physical singles and was replaced on 1 January 2008 by the Top Digital Download, reflecting digital sales, with the last physical #1 being Elvis Presley’s remix of "Baby Let’s Play House." The DVD Chart began in October 2003, and by 2011 it covered the top 20 music DVDs. A separate chart for digital singles started in April 2006, with the first digital #1 Gianna Nannini’s "Sei nell’anima," and the digital singles chart became the official chart in 2008.

Italy’s music certifications have a long history. Since the mid-1970s, albums and singles earned Gold, Platinum, and other statuses, with thresholds changing over time. In July 2017, album certifications began to include streaming. The Diamond award, originally based on five-times Platinum, was changed in January 2012 to ten-times Platinum. FIMI maintains a certification database to verify these levels.

FIMI is based in Milan and is chaired by Enzo Mazza, who was confirmed as chairman in July 2011. Its website is fimi.it.
