Fantastic Max
Fantastic Max is a lighthearted American-British animated series from the late 1980s. It follows Maxwell “Fantastic Max” Young, a boy who travels through outer space with his two quirky toys: FX, a pull‑string alien doll from a planet called Twinkle-Twinkle, and A.B. Sitter, a block-built android whose look is reminiscent of C-3PO. Together they have sci‑fi adventures full of humor and imagination.
The show was produced by Hanna-Barbera in collaboration with Kalisto Ltd., Booker PLC, Tanaka Promotion Co., and S4C, with animation by Siriol Animation in the United Kingdom. It was developed from an idea called Space Baby by Judy Rothman Rofé and Robin Lyons, with Mike Young later helping to shape the series. The pilot Space Baby aired in 1986 on The Disney Channel and in the United Kingdom on BBC1 in 1987.
Fantastic Max aired in the United States in syndication as part of the Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera, with the first season running from September 17, 1988, to December 10, 1988, and the second season from October 29, 1989, to January 21, 1990. In the United Kingdom, the show appeared on BBC1, with episodes often split into two parts. The series consists of 26 episodes across two seasons, each about 20 minutes long.
The voice cast includes Ben Ryan Ganger as Max, with notable contributions from Nancy Cartwright, Gregg Berger, Elisabeth Harnois, Paul Eiding, Gail Matthius, and Don Messick. The music features theme compositions by Clark Glassman and Michael Tavera.
Reruns aired on Boomerang until 2013, and in 2025 some episodes returned on Amazon’s WBTV Cartoon Rewind. Home videos were released in the UK and US on various VHS tapes, but there has been no DVD release of the complete series. Fantastic Max remains a nostalgic romp about a space-loving kid and his two extraordinary toys as they explore the wonders—and dangers—of space.
