Ebony White is a fictional character from the 1940s comic The Spirit, created by Will Eisner. He first appeared on June 2, 1940, as The Spirit’s black sidekick. His age is unclear: at times he’s a resourceful twelve-year-old boy, but in early stories he’s shown as an adult taxi driver. He often helps The Spirit solve crimes and is trusted by the city’s officials. The pair share a home life in a hidden space beneath Denny Colt’s tomb in Wildwood Cemetery.

Ebony is known for his wide range of skills. He can drive a taxi, has extensive knowledge of Central City, and sometimes builds useful devices, like a Morse code transmitter. He and The Spirit form a strong bond, and Ebony is treated as part of a family by Ellen Dolan, Commissioner Dolan, and the police. He remains a key member of The Spirit’s supporting cast for about nine years, until late 1949 when he is phased out and replaced by a less capable partner, Sammy.

The character is often cited as an example of racial stereotyping in mid-20th-century American culture. Ebony’s appearance—very short, with large white eyes and exaggerated lips—along with his speech, reflected then-common racist caricatures. Eisner later said he had mixed feelings about the portrayal. While Ebony was treated with respect by the other characters in the stories, many readers and critics have argued that the depiction was problematic. Over time Eisner and others added more non-caricature Black characters to the series in an effort to move beyond stereotypes.

In addition to his comic work, Ebony is credited as the composer of the song “Ev’ry Little Bug,” which appears in The Spirit sections from 1946 to 1950; sheet music was published, and a late-1980s recording brought the tune back to fans.

In later continuities, Ebony appears in new forms. In DC Comics’ 2007 Spirit series, he is depicted as a fourteen-year-old street kid who illegally drives a taxi, with his backstory tied to Colt and his crime-solving help for The Spirit. In some other reimaginings, Ebony appears as a teenage girl named Eubie in a 1987 TV film. A 2015 series even reworks his name to Aloysius, making him a private investigator working with a new partner and his cousin.

Ebony White’s legacy is mixed: he is a memorable part of The Spirit, but his original portrayal sparked ongoing debates about race and representation in comics.
