Deep Sengupta, born on 30 June 1988 in Chakradharpur, Jharkhand, India, is a chess grandmaster from India. He became the country’s 22nd grandmaster in 2010 and reached a peak FIDE rating of 2596 in July 2017. As of January 2026, his rating was 2479. He started playing chess at the Chakradharpur Chess Academy and rose quickly, winning the World Youth Championship for under-12s in 2000, earning his first GM norm at the World Junior Championship in Kochi in 2004, and winning the Indian juniors title in 2005. He claimed the Doeberl Cup in 2009, which gave him a second GM norm, and in 2010 tied for first at the Cannes Open, securing the final requirements for the Grandmaster title. He also won Hastings Masters in 2010/11 on a tiebreak, and later claimed the Commonwealth Chess Championship in 2014. Additional successes include winning the Hastings events in 2016/2017 and being a co-winner in 2017/2018, as well as tying for first in the 2019 Bangkok Open with Jan Gustafsson. Sengupta lives in Kasba and works for the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation of India. His elder brother Pratik Sengupta is also a chess player.
